Jackson Therapeutic Recreation
Jackson Therapeutic Recreation is an agency providing supplemental 1:1 programs of therapeutic engagement to people living in care settings. Think of it as a day program that comes to you, but with everything custom-designed for each person. Our therapists tailor activities to each resident’s abilities, needs and interests, keeping them engaged in ways that are relevant and meaningful to them.
Activities can engage people in all of the 5 domains, using and protecting functionality in all its forms. Themes we always look to include are independence, choice, control, role, purpose and identity. Sessions can occur in the care home or involve community outings. Jackson Therapeutic Recreation staff work with residents, families and care teams to set goals that address specific therapeutic objectives while helping improve overall quality of living.
We are able to work with a wide range of ages and barriers. We support people living with Alzheimer’s or other dementias, including those with responsive behaviours, and are regularly referred by Alzheimer’s Societies and Behavioural Supports Ontario. We are also able to support residents living with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges. There is no formal referral process and families / guardians can contact us directly for a no-charge initial consultation.
We set regular schedules of sessions, our staff are available days, evenings and weekends, and the same therapist comes each time. We take documentation and accountability very seriously. Detailed session reports are emailed to families after each session, with a link into our system to see additional data on how time was spent, assessment and re-assessment scores, and progress on each SMART goal in the treatment plan. A dedicated Clinical Manager is always available to family and care teams to discuss ideas, suggestions or concerns.
Therapeutic Recreation is a powerful tool that supports all aspects of a person, helping them thrive to the maximum extent possible. Brochures are available for download from our site or in hard copy by request.
