Expanding Skin and Wound Care Treatment in Long-Term Care
The Ontario government has announced a $3.74 million investment to expand skin and wound care training for 1,100 long-term care staff across the province. This initiative aims to help residents receive faster, safer treatment within their long-term care homes—reducing unnecessary emergency department visits and preventing avoidable hospitalizations.
Building on previous training efforts, this expansion introduces a fourth training stream launching this winter. It will support nurses, personal support workers, and other regulated health professionals in developing advanced clinical skills for managing complex skin and wound care needs.
This investment is part of Ontario’s broader strategy to strengthen long-term care by:
-
Enhancing staffing and clinical competencies
-
Improving quality, safety, and resident outcomes
-
Modernizing long-term care homes
-
Ensuring residents have timely access to specialized care
