Today, the Ontario government announced more than $180 million in new funding to attract and retain approximately 8,000 nurses in the province’s long-term care homes.
Minister of Long-Term Care Natalia Kusendova-Bashta spoke candidly about her professional experience as a registered nurse and emphasized that the funding will help strengthen both the quality of care and the quality of life for residents by expanding the nursing workforce in long-term care communities.
Key initiatives include the launching of new programs to support mentorship opportunities for 4,000 nurses, financial incentives to recruit 4,000 more, and a pilot program giving nursing students hands-on experience in LTC homes.
These initiatives aim to attract, train, and retain skilled nurses across the province and support the government’s long-term care plan built on four-pillars: staffing and care; quality and enforcement; building modern, safe, and comfortable homes; and connecting seniors with faster, more convenient access to the services they need.
