FCO Land Acknowledgement

FCO is headquartered in Ontario, the province with the largest Indigenous population and home to many diverse and vibrant Indigenous communities from all over Turtle Island. Much of the Great Lakes area is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant,  which symbolizes sharing the land and resources for mutual benefit, as if eating all together from the same bowl with one spoon to share, ensuring one does not eat everything and leave nothing for those sitting at the same table.

FCO also acknowledges that many folks of African descent did not arrive to Turtle Island by choice, but whose ancestors were forcibly displaced and enslaved by the Transatlantic slave trade. Colonialism is an ongoing process, and members of Indigenous and African communities bear an undue burden.

FCO would like to encourage our service users and partners to reflect on colonialism's enduring legacy, and consider the ways colonialism has impacted long-term care including:

  • Who has access to care?
  • How is care delivered?
  • What ways could care be made safe for each and every person?
  • How can Long-Term Care Homes and Family Councils support residents and families whose experiences may differ vastly from their own?

FCO is committed to advancing anti-oppression, decolonization, and ensuring historically marginalized voices are uplifted. This approach informs FCO's policies, processes, programming, and overall strategy to envision a future of inclusive, equitable, and accessible care.
